“Coastal Acrylics” Class: Painting Seascapes with Charlotte Chastain

January 17, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Living in Florida’s First Coast, home to some of the nation’s most beautiful beaches, coastal paintings are an essential art form in our community. In this class, beginner and intermediate students will create their own ocean-inspired acrylic paintings. The ocean is one of the most challenging yet satisfying subjects an artist can seek to capture.  In this class, you will paint seascapes from your photos or other references, challenging yourself to isolate a fraction of a moment and simplify it onto your canvas. Instructor Charlotte Chastain will teach basic principles of composition, mixing colors/color palette, paint application, value contrasts, juxtaposition of subject matters, and more. Students will complete one to two paintings over the course of this six-week series.

A supply list including two canvases, suggested paint brushes and paint, palette, palette knife, and other materials will be provided at least two weeks before the class start date. First Coast Cultural Center members receive a 30% discount on supplies at PV Arts and Crafts in the Winn-Dixie shopping center in Ponte Vedra Beach. Suggested paint colors include:  Titanium white, Cadmium yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium red, Cadmium orange, Alizarin crimson, Ultramarine blue, Ultramarine blue light, Cerulean blue, Burnt umber, Raw sienna, Raw Umber, Sap green, Cobalt (or turquoise) green

Meet Charlotte

Charlotte Chastain is a native of Thomasville, Georgia and began her artistic endeavors as a child, studying privately under the founder of the Thomasville Cultural Center. Her passion for painting led her to study watercolor painting at the University of Georgia, where her professor recognized her talent and encouraged her to continue painting after college. In 2004, Charlotte returned to college and attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Rome, Italy for four months studying oil painting, art history, and gardens in Northern Italy.  She then attended University of North Florida where she graduated with a Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing, magna cum laude. A master gardener who began gardening alongside her mother and grandmother, and later received formal training at RISD, Charlotte’s travels to gardens throughout the world as a Merchant Marine are reflected in her landscape paintings. Through color, light, and careful observation, she captures strength and beauty in her paintings’ distinctive realistic points of view.  Charlotte’s award-winning work has been recognized in exhibitions throughout the United States, where she has held many solo exhibitions. Her paintings hang in many corporations and private homes. A long-time active member of the First Coast Cultural Center, Chastain was recognized as the Center’s Volunteer of the Year in 2022 and exhibited at the Center in May 2022.  Website:
